Gothenburg's Regional Championship in Racketlon Doubles 2009

Today in Aleyckan Sport Centre in Gothenburg was Gothenburg Regional Championship played. There were quite a few players considering this was a doubles Tournament. Everyone seemed to enjoy the tournament and it was indeed an interesting concept and it will undoubtedly be more tournaments like this one.

QUARTERFINALS
Stefan Engström /Håkan Granberg-Lennart Ekblom /Håkan lösnitz.
It was great to see Engström in action again. Engström hasn't taken part in a local Tournament for a while, although he and Granberg reached the quarterfinal in World Tour Tournament a few months ago. He showed solid and strong table-tennis throughout the whole tournament.
Also very good to see Lennart Ekblom again. Ekblom has been injured for quite a while, but seemed to be in good shape. Lösnitz hasn't played many tournaments but he showed good form. Granberg nr 2 on the Gothenburg ranking and Engström did  expectingly win quite comfortably.

Niclas Larsson /Daniel Majetic-Joel Larsson/Daniel Schön
This was Schön's first tournament. But he and Joel Larsson fought back well against Majetic and Larsson. First-seeded Larsson and Majetic won fairly comfortably.

Erik Sturesson/Martin Ahlstedt-Niklas Sandin/PO Svanberg
Third-seeded Ahlstedt and Sturessson showed good form winning against Svanberg and Sandin. This was Svanberg's first racketlon tournament and he especially played really good squash against strong squash player Sturesson. Sandin has played very well in many tournaments this year and he and Svanberg did well against Ahlstedt and Sturesson. But the third-seeded players were too strong in the end in tennis.

Daniel Svensson/Mikael Svensson- Jan Ståhlgren/Hans Bjarnehed
This was indeed a very interesting game. Everyone knew it was good to be even game. The Svensson's brothers played extremely good table-tennis and won 21-6.
 Bjarnehed and Ståhlgren came back strongly winning 21-17 in badminton. "We should have won bigger in badminton", comented Bjarnehed after the game.  In the squash Ståhlgren played at his peak winning 11-2 against Daniel. Mikael played really well in squash just loosing 8-10 against strong squash player Bjarnehed. 21-10 for Ståhlgren& Bjarnehed. It was totally even before tennis. The tennis was enormously dramatic. It was even up to 20-20. Svensson's took the lead 21-20. Apparently the Svensson's brothers saved 3-4 smashes/volleys in the last ball finally getting it in winning 22-20. Winning by just 2 balls. What a game! Maybe next year Ståhlgren and Bjarnehed will have a revenge.

SEMIFINALS
Engström/Granberg -Svensson/Svensson
Before the game one expected Svenssons to win the tabletennis considering they are strong table-tennis players. But Engström and Granberg played really, really well winning all the long rallys. They won the game 21-18. The game seemed to be over, since Granberg's best sport is badminton.  But Svenssons came back remarkably strongly playing very good badminton just loosing  17-21. In the squash Granberg and Engström showed their class winning 21-2.  Svensson played well but Granberg and Engström were just too good.
Larsson/ Majetic- Sturesson/Ahlstedt
Ahlstedt and Sturesson played good table-tennis in the start of the game. But Majetic, Class 1 table-tennis player, showed in the end his class. Larsson & Majetic won 21-10. In badminton Larsson/Majetic started out brilliantly leading 15-0. Larsson missed an easy smash and yelled out his disappointment. He apologized afterwards for this behaviour. But he still thought it was a crap smash but maybe it was a bit unneccessary to yell considering they were leading 15-0.  The game ended 21-5. In the squash Majetic won 11-3 against Ahlstedt. Sturesson played at his peak at the start of the game against Larsson. One divison 1 tabletennis-player from Partille in the audience commented on one ball. "It was the best ball I have seen." Larsson felt bloodtaste in the mouth after that ball and felt he wanted to quit playing. The result of the game was 10-8 for Larsson. The game was over.

FINAL

The first-seeded against the second-seeded. A great final indeed. Especially Engström played well in the table-tennis. It looked for a while like they were loosing quite big 9-19, but Engström showed his class in the end and the results was 21-14 for Larsson and Majetic. In the badminton game there was really one player on the court. Majetic played like he was a magician. He & Larsson won the game 21-19. They now had 9 up before the squash. Firstly Granberg faced Majetic. At the start of the game again Majetic played at his peak, he was up 5-4. But then Granberg showed his allround capacity and very strongly won the game 11-6. Engström started up really well against Larsson winning the first 3 balls. The score was  at the start 15-7.  Engström killed the ball effectively. But Larsson came back very strongly winning 8 straight balls 15-15. The final score was 21-19 to Engström. Larsson & Majetic needed 15 points in tennis in order to win the game. Especially Granberg showed his class at the start of the tennis. His team was up by 5-1 and Granberg and Engström continued to play well even though Larsson got in a few good serves. The score was at one stage 18-10 for Granberg and Engström and it looked like the game was over. Larsson talked to Majetic at this stage saying: "It is ok, they probably underestimate us now". Larsson got in some volleys and a couple of serves, the score was 20-13 to Granberg/Engström. They had a matchpoint. Larsson serves well 20-14.  Majetic finishes off the game by playing a few good volleys. 2 points up for Majetic & Larsson. They are now Gothenburg Regional Champions in Doubles. What a game! Majetic is now still unbeaten in Local Doubles Tournaments  and he took his second Regional Championship. Granberg showed his class yet again, he always impressingly reaches the final in local Tournaments.
